What should I do to make my child apply lotion on his dry skin?
I am a single mom with 1 son who is 13. Ever since the winter came around I felt he had dry skin on his entire body. Where we live the snow is packed and its very cold it, so thats probably what caused the dry skin. His skin almost feels like sandpaper its so bad.
I knew I had to get lotion, so I got Nivea Body lotion, its a new bottle easy to use and it is supposed to break down bad dry skin.
I give him short baths, and I tell him he has to apply lotion on his entire body after his bath right away. I only rub lotion on his back where he cant reach it.
But I noticed that the bottle of lotion is still just about full besides when I do his back, and his dry skin is still excatly the same and I found out he is obviously not even using lotion, his back has improved a little beacuse thats where I did it my self.
The next time I lotioned him head to toe and I thought after that he would want to do it him self. I don’t know what to do anymore, please what I am to do?
and also, I think I saw a post like this with a mom and her child who was 11 and had dry skin.
but since my child is 13, I still don’t have any idea what I am to do.
Keep doing it yourself. If he is a normal 13 year old he will want to keep his privacy and start doing it himself. It’s normal at his age to not care much about his hygiene. I am on my son all the time about the same thing.
you should go to the doctor for a stonger type of cream to clear his skin up.
i have a steroid based cream for my skin, and it clears it up in a day or two normally

He probably thought lotion is a female stuff.
Allow him to pick up a lotion for men for himself next time. If he still refuses to use it, then so be it! Let him use Dove soap instead.
Anyway, dry skin don’t kill.

It depends on what time he usually takes his shower. If he has other things to do after the shower besides go to bed or leave for school he should not be allowed to do those things until he has put on the lotion. You should start a routine with him where he is required to put lotion on immediately after his shower and then he must bring the lotion to you to put lotion on his back. If he does not do this you can start with a small immediate punishment like making him do push ups where you control the movement by telling him when to go up and when to go down. If he’s not in the best of shape he will hate doing this and find the lotion task a lot easier. If that does not work you can move on to taking away small privileges. You have to remind kids at that age that they are not invincible and that the skin they have now is the skin they will have for the rest of their lives so they need to take care of it. Unfortunately, having him put lotion on may be something you have to remind him of on a daily basis for quite a few years especially since he is already 13 and it is not part of his daily regimen.
You may also want to look into a better safer lotion melaleuca sells an all natural lotion called renew that worked wonders on my kids. We live in Alaska and they can actually skip a day or two with out getting too dry. My youngest used to have eczema like rashes before we started using it.

Have him use Aquaphor after he bathes. It’s odorless, colorless but thick enough so that he doesn’t have to reapply. Boys don’t like to "lotion" themselves all the time. It’s a "chick’ thing, feel me? Only we "girls" like that stuff. Nivea smells too girly, plain and simple. And Aquaphor is dermatologist recommended. I used it on my daughter’s severe eczema and she hasn’t had an outbreak of dryness since. You can find it, pretty much, at any drug store i.e. Walgreens, CVS, Rite-Aid, etc.

leave him alone. obviously the dry skin bothers only you. please give him his right to privacy on this personal issue. his skin will be fine. one day when he’s older he will probably take steps himself if the problem persists but in the meantime you are potentially harming your relationship with him and possibly causing control issues or over protectiveness. 13 is a crucial age. take care.
