However, many acne sufferers like myself started getting acne again a couple months after finishing Accutane. Based on my own personal experiences, my acne became severe again, making the entire Accutane treatment process a complete waste of time and money. So, use Accutane at your own risk. The side effects are very annoying, and the frequent doctor trips become very time consuming. You need to remember to take all the pills required, which can be quite a hassle. Accutane is a decent acne treatment, but it doesn’t work for everyone.

Low temperatures, low humidity and strong, harsh winds deplete skin of its natural lipid layer which keeps the skin from drying out. To keep your skin feeling dewy and moist even in the harsh winter weather, follow these dry skin fix-it tips:

  • Keep Water Lukewarm, Not Hot

Hot water robs skin of moisture causing dry skin, so it’s best to shower in lukewarm water. If you can’t bear this rule, try to keep your warm showers short and try showering only once per day. This also means skipping the hot tubs in winter. The hot, hot temperature, combined with drying chemicals, is torture on dry skin.

The same rule applies to hand-washing: Wash hands in lukewarm, never hot, water. If your skin turns red, the water is simply too hot. Moisturize After Showers or Handwashing

Moisturizer is the key to soft, supple skin in winter. Apply product when skin is slightly damp. For best effect, pat skin dry instead of rubbing with your towel before application.

  • Exfoliate on a Weekly or Semi-weekly Basis

  • Stay Hydrated But Don’t Go Overboard

Many people believe if they drink more water, they’ll hydrate skin. But I’ve read time and time again that this is a myth and you simply cannot moisturize skin from the inside out.

  • Don’t Forget Your Lips

Licking your lips will not moisturize them and instead will help dry them out. Lips retain less moisture than other parts of the body, so they tend to dry out more quickly. A simple lip balm helps, as does my all-time favorite lip trick learned in high school from “Seventeen” magazine: moisturize your lips with Vaseline.

Take a toothbrush and “brush” your lips in a circular motion. This will remove dead flakes and leave your lips soft and supple.

  • Your Face Needs Extra Care in Winter

Cold, winter wind can wreak havoc on skin. To keep your face supple in winter, apply moisturizer to your face before going out into the cold and cover your face with a scarf in harsh wind. If you have super, duper sensitive skin, consider avoiding rinsing your face with tap water, which can contain harsh minerals that are especially drying to the skin

Instead, do like the French and cleanse skin in winter with a cleaner that does not require rinsing.

Extra tip: Try spritzing your face with facial wate before applying moisturizer several times during the day in the office. The water locks in moisture and leaves skin refreshed even in harsh office heat.

Keratin Rich Creams Are Better Than Collagen Moisturizers

When you are shopping for a collagen moisturizer, you need to go armed with some information. If not, you could end up paying for it with itching, redness, irritation or worse. In a recent survey conducted by the US Food and Drug Administration, 25% of consumers reported having adverse reactions to cosmetics. Some of them were pretty serious.

It doesn’t really seem that moisturizers would fall under the category of cosmetics, but they do. Until recently, no one realized that chemicals and other contaminants would penetrate the skin’s layers. It was, of course, known that some people had allergic reactions, but the frequency of these reactions was believed to be small, much smaller than 25%.

One of the ingredients that are prone to cause prolonged redness is collagen, particularly when it is derived from animal skins. In some of the safer products, the protein is derived from marine sources; primarily fish bones. They are less likely to cause redness, but are still largely ineffective.

You see the best collagen moisturizer does not contain collagens. It contains another type of protein that can penetrate deeply, nourishing the skin’s layers and improving their moisture content. The protein is called keratin, but not just any keratin will do.

When it is used as an ingredient in cosmetics, it is typically derived from animal hooves, horns or bones. In order to make it soluble, the companies use high temperatures and harsh chemicals. These processes destroy the functionality of the protein. As a manufacture would put it, it is no longer bioactive.

Keratin, of any kind, has long been included in hypoallergenic products. As the primary component of the cells that make up the epidermis, it is readily accepted by them. Collagen-fibers are located four to five layers beneath the epidermis, so our outer skin does not react well to it.

So, why would you call a keratin-rich cream a collagen moisturizer? There are several reasons.

All of the skin’s layers need moisture. We get some of it from water, when we bathe. Some of it comes from within, as perspiration passes through, but most of it is secreted by the sebaceous glands and is used to lubricate the outermost layers, preventing wind and sun from damaging the cells.

There are only a few ingredients that can penetrate deeply enough to nourish and moisturize all of the skin’s cells and fibers. Bioactive keratin is one of them.

Researchers can measure the effectiveness of a collagen moisturizer. Glycerin, for example, has been shown to increase the skin’s moisture content by about 5%. Bioactive keratin has been shown to increase the skin’s moisture content by five times that amount.

In order to create a keratin-rich cream that could be picked up and used by the skin’s cells, patented processes were used to extract the protein from sheep’s wool and gently make it water soluble. Those processes were developed by the KERATEC Company in New Zealand. It’s a tough ingredient to find in a collagen moisturizer, but it’s worth the effort to look for it.

Use Oil Free Moisturizers if You Want a Dry and Dull Skin!

Many People are resorting to Oil Free Moisturizers these days to achieve a wrinkle free and glowing skin. But, that is a fatal mistake on their part. I can just hope you are not among the ones using oil free moisturizers as they are just a sheer waste of your hard earned money!

Logically speaking, there is no problem in assuming that oil free moisturizer can work effectively for your skin health. But the scientific reality is very different. I shall give you the scientific reasons why oil free moisturizers lead to a dry and dull skin.

We think that oil based skin care moisturizers contain oils that clog our skin. This is definitely true for a large part of the sub standard moisturizer brands because they use mineral oils as their ingredient! Just imagine the amount of damage mineral oils can do to your skin’s moisture balance.

Skin care moisturizer manufacturers use mineral oils because they are cheap. But mineral oils are not meant to moisturize human skin. They clog the skin’s pores and leave them suffocating for fresh oxygen. The unnourished and suffocated skin cells are unable to be free of the toxins that are present in them and this toxic accumulation then takes other dangerous forms of release.

It leads to acne eruptions, allergies, skin inflammation, rashes and many other skin disorders. Now this is not what one would expect to get after applying a skincare moisturizer. But this is what they get when they use skincare moisturizer with mineral oils in them.

This frightens most people and they naturally resort to oil free moisturizers. But, that is yet another big mistake and another extreme. What they don’t realize is that our skin also has natural oils that are vital for skin health and nourishment. These natural oils play vital role in keeping our skin soft, supple and moist.

It is important to preserve these oils as they get lost from our skin due to various factors like stress, pollution, etc. And a dry skin is highly vulnerable to infections, rashes, wrinkles and an accelerated skin aging.

Therefore the need is to avoid the mineral oils that are present in sub standard moisturizers. Oil free moisturizers will not be of much help for effective skin rejuvenation, as they will not help restore the balance of natural oils in the skin.
